“Building And Equipping The Saints”

147 Years (mostly recent history) as of September 11, 2026 (AM 5787)

(Formerly:

Mt. Moriah Baptist Church &

Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church)

[Researched in Brooks County governmental archives & compiled by Dr. Sharon Breeden, currently the pastor of Mt. Moriah: The Word Church, Inc. - Her pastorship tenure began in July 2010 (AM 5770) to this present time]

PAST HISTORY & ESTABLISHMENT: Established by gathering and holding the first church service on June 8, 1879, (AM 5639) the second Sunday in June, on 1 acre of land and later with an additional 2.3 acres of land purchased on January 3, 1906, (AM 5666) (26 years after Mt. Moriah’s establishment) the deacons and members of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church currently own 3.3 total acres of land in Land District 15 and Land Lot #46. The Mt. Moriah deacons at the time of this establishment and purchase were Dea. Fred Rogers, Dea. Henry Moore, Dea. Anthony Horne, and Dea. Lewis Myers. Those deacons purchased the land for Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and their successors from W. W. Walker, a prominent white settler and businessman who had acquired this land during the historic Georgia Land Lotteries (1805-1833), where land that the government acquired and had taken from the Native Americans was distributed to white settlers for ownership to have and to hold through a land lottery process.

Mt. Moriah has a history that currently spans the past 147 years and carries a long list of pastors, deacons, deaconesses, trustees, missionaries, superintendents, ushers, willing workers, members - and the roles continue - those who laid the foundation for where we currently worship. For them, we are eternally grateful. Some of the recorded past pastors were Rev. Huewitt, Rev. Butts, Rev. Arrington, Rev. Toson, and Rev. Dr. Joe Troope.

Mt. Moriah Baptist Church made missionary baptist history on August 1, 1999, (AM 5759) when Dr. Joe Troope, pastor, along with 7 other licensed and ordained clergy, ordained Min. Sharon Breeden. God called her as the first female preacher in the missionary baptist church and Brooks County Union in Brooks County. She preached her trial sermon in the Mt. Moriah pulpit to a packed house. The Sermon Title was “Hold On - Change Is Coming”. The scriptural reference area was 2 Corinthians 4:5-10: 5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

After Min. Sharon Breeden’s ordination by Dr. Troope on August 1, 1999, (AM 5759) (120 years after Mt. Moriah’s establishment) as the first female minister in the missionary baptist unions and associations in Brooks County, Georgia, by October 1999, (AM 5760) because of doctrinal restrictions, Mt. Moriah Baptist Church entered the new millennium in the Gregorian year 2000 (AM 5760) without any denominational connections or affiliations. That remains in effect even to this present time.

In 2010, (AM 5770) (131 years after Mt. Moriah’s establishment), when Dr. Troope informed Mt. Moriah that God led him to leave to pastor another ministry, Mt. Moriah was left in the hands of his Assistant/Associate Pastor, Min. Sharon Breeden, who is now the current pastor. Every Sunday, all the members gathered around the altar and continually petitioned God to be our King and our leader as he prepared and sent our next Pastor after His own heart. The ministry doors never closed; the church remained open and functional under the leadership of Pastor Sharon Breeden.

In 2017, (AM 5777) (138 years after the establishment of Mt. Moriah) the vision of this ministry that God gave Pastor Breeden for the body at Mt. Moriah became “Building and Equipping the Saints” through the Word of God. We have become a Word Church and a Teaching Ministry as we grow in God, focusing on this vision.

On June 8, 2019, (AM 5779) (140 years after the establishment of Mt. Moriah), Pastor Breeden was led by God to have her spiritual covering, Apostle Dr. C. L. Roberts, institute a service at Mt. Moriah and corporately rededicate the church, the ministry, and its members back to God to be used for His glory! God is faithful!

On January 13, 2023, (AM 5783) (144 years after the establishment of Mt. Moriah) the church name was legally changed and incorporated from Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church to Mt. Moriah: The Word Church, Inc. as a non-profit, tax-exempt governmental entity.

Currently, as of September 11, 2026, (AM 5787) (147 years after Mt. Moriah’s establishment), Mt. Moriah: The Word Church, Inc. has a Licensed and Ordained Ministerial Team/Governing Board. Mt. Moriah is “Building and Equipping the Saints” through teaching and preaching the Word of God through multiple platforms and social media outlets.

HISTORICAL NOTE: The AM before a Hebrew year stands for Anno Mundi which in Latin means “in the year of the world’s creation”. It represents the world’s biblical creation and the beginning of Adam and Eve. (AM is according to the Hebrew/Jewish calendar and God’s timing, not the Gregorian calendar which was created at a later time. God’s timing is KAIROS.)

Scripture

Our Foundation

Psalms 127:1 - Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Ephesians 4:11-16 - 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Mission

THE ESSENTIAL MISSION STEPS OF A FULLY FUNCTIONAL MINISTRY FOR MT. MORIAH: THE WORD CHURCH, INCORPORATED

(The mission steps pave the path to reaching the vision)

As God builds ministry and brings his vision for your church into fruition, God sustains, blesses and keeps all of his ministries intact as we work and wait on the fullness of time and Jesus’s return. Knowing that God is faithful to us, there are many commands in His word that we must commit to and be faithful to keep as members of Mt. Moriah in order to meet the essential mission of the church. Those commands are considered essential seeing that our God has done everything for us; He has never failed us. We must obey and trust him completely. GOD IS WORTHY OF ALL OF OUR PRAISE!

1. The church MUST study the word of God every day. In 2 Timothy 2:15-16 the word of God admonishes us to study to show ourselves approved to God. By studying and meditating on the word of God we will find all of our answers to every situation, trouble and problem.

2. The church MUST obey, speak and walk in the word of God. Psalm 119:11 instructs us that the word of God provides light as a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our pathway.

3. The church MUST use their gifts from God individually and collectively. As we move forward in him we change lives and win souls for God’s kingdom. Romans 12:4-8 equips us with the details on how the gifts reflects God’s glory and advance the cause of the body of Christ.

4. The church MUST make and keep God’s houses clean and beautiful. In Haggai 1:2-9 God shares his heart on how he wants his house to look in comparison to our personal homes. We want to always honor, respect and take care of God’s house as well as our own homes, so that our lives and our families can be continually blessed. We want a beautiful edifice for God to dwell in with his people as we gather on the first day of the week to honor Him, give Him glory and praise him for all of his mighty works in our lives.

5. The church MUST assemble together every week. Hebrews 10:25 says that truly God is good and blesses us and our families all week long. He gives us six days to do whatever is needful for our existence. Because he is so good to us, we owe him a day of worship time to thank him and give him glory, and praise his name for his immeasurable greatness, mercy and grace toward us. Consider this as well; we come together, not so much to be blessed by somebody, but that our coming be a blessing to somebody else. We never know who God has put in our path. It is a blessing to others to see your smiling face, hug you, shake your hand or get an encouraging word from you. We are always supposed to reach outward to serve others and bring others to Christ that they might be saved; that is what Jesus Christ did - blessed others by His coming, hanging on the cross, bleeding and dying for us. He did not come from heaven to earth in a body for himself or to save himself; he came from heaven to earth so that WE could be saved. He came to a blessed saviour for us. It is not about us; it is all about God!

6. The church MUST pay tithes and offerings to God. Malachi 3:6-12 commands that we must always give God what is due to him, even a portion of all of our finances. He gave more to us than we could ever give back to him. He only asks for ten percent of how he prospers us. Finally, we should never rob God.

7. The church MUST love each other and mankind, unconditionally. Matthew 22:33-40 and Mark 12:28-31 leads us to understand that love is the foundation of our salvation. Without love, we, the saints of God, will not be saved for the God who saves us is manifested love. Our salvation is not in vain for as we are God’s children and God’s people, we love others just like God loves us. That is our whole duty in the earth. Love unconditionally, and then love unconditionally; finally, love unconditionally some more!

8. The church MUST walk by faith and not by sight and forgive others. Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11 Hebrews 10:38 and Mark 11:22-26 stir us in the direction of walking by faith. We are the justified and live by faith in God. As a result, it does not matter what situations may look like to our eyes; nor does it matter what negative words or sounds our ears may hear. It does even matter how experiences may make us feel. We must remember that the word of God said that it is FAITH in God and in his word that pleases God. It is impossible to please God when we do not operate in faith (Hebrews 11:6); and consequently, it is impossible to be forgiven throughout our faith walk if we do not first forgive others.

Each church walks out the steps of their specific mission on the way to perfecting the vision of the ministry; let us keep our eyes on the prize. Our map that charts our entire course is undeniably THE WORD OF GOD. Finally, we should always be mindful of this: May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart always be accepted in your sight, oh Lord, for you are my rock and my strength and redeemer (Psalm 19:14). Designing your church’s in-house strategies for each essential step of the mission perfects the vision for the ministry. Yet, it takes time, focus and an ear attuned to the voice of God. In the glorious name of the head of the church, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Beliefs

01

THE WORD OF GOD!

We believe that the WORD OF GOD is the FINAL AUTHORITY in all matters pertaining to how we are living our daily lives while we are earnestly making preparations for the Lord's return to forever be with the Lord, once our earthly journey/pilgrimage is finished/accomplished.

02

THE LORD WILL RETURN

John 14:1-3 - 1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
